New Exhibit: “Images of the Maya Gods in the 16th Century: The Encounter of Two Worlds”
This exhibition will be presented at the Cooperation Espanola in Antigua Guatemala (ex-Jesuit Convent and College) beginning on Tuesday, July 16. It contains more than one hundred pieces, engravings, maps, photographs and facsimiles of documents that illustrate the clash between the European worldview and the indigenous Maya religion in the 16th century, especially as it pertains to the violent encounters that occurred between the sacred images of the Maya gods of the region of Yucatan and the Kingdom of Guatemala, and their clash with European Catholic Christian beliefs.
Not to be missed.
