Good Friday, Procession of Jesús Sepultado and Virgen de la Soledad from Escuela de Cristo Church.
The procession of the Holy Burial from Escuela de Cristo Church, has a combination of elements from Seville, Zamora, Valladolid in Spain and its own characteristics of Antigüeña Holy Week.
It is one of the longest processions in La Antigua, not only referring to the processional route but also the procession itself. Besides the main floats of Jesús Sepultado and Virgen de La Soledad, 24 “Pasos”, allegorical scenes that represent each one a station of the Vía Crucis, accompany the procession. Also marches The Angelic Choir: Composed of seven archangels, stunning wood sculptures dating back to colonial times and long lines of faithful men and women, all dressed in black waiting to carry, on their shoulders, the floats of Jesús Sepultado and Virgen de la Soledad.
Do not miss the pass of the procession through the Central Park at around 9:00 p.m. It is a moving scene, thousands of people around the park with lighted candles, wait for the passage of the procession. Procession stops in front of the Cathedral, while a soprano sings “El Perdón” (forgiveness).
It is one of the oldest and undoubtedly the most elegant of the processions in the city. Jesús Sepultado sculpted at the end of the XVII century, was originally a crucified Christ, being modified during the first half of the XIX century, the sculpture can be placed now in both positions, as a crucified Christ (During the ceremony of crucifixion that takes place at noon, before the procession leaves the church), and as a buried Christ as it goes on the procession.
The stunning image of Virgen de la Soledad, considered one of the most beautiful sculptures of the colonial imagery in the whole American continent, accompanies her dead Son in the procession. It is probably the biggest Virgin Mary procession in the country.
FRI-APR 19 Procession leaves Escuela de Cristo Church at 4:00 p.m and returns on Saturday of Glory at aproximately 3:00 a.m.
