Palm Sunday, Procession of Jesús Nazareno de La Merced
The image of Jesús Nazareno de La Merced dates back to the middle of the seventeenth century, and belonged to the now abandoned Hermitage of San Jerónimo. This image was consecrated on April 4th, 1971 by the Archbishop of Guatemala.
One of Antigua’s most cherished processions, Jesus Nazareno de La Merced marches through town in two occasions: First, Each Palm Sunday, and the procession is called La Reseña; and every Good Friday, Penance Procession.
The Procession of La Reseña is characterized by the anda’s biblical themed adornment, the embroideries in the tunic that Jesus wears , and the use of a carved and golden Cross on his shoulder.
The image of Virgin Mary accompanies her Son in procession.
